Sunbar

Shaw Pong Liu

Public art project exploring ways to stay warm and connected during cold Boston winters through bus shelter interventions with interactive live music and free drinks. Lead artist Shaw Pong Liu with collaborators Cornell Coley, percussion, Aziza Robison-Goodnight, host artist, John Turner, bass, and teen artist-researchers from the Urbano Project.

Teen artist-researchers conducted playful, neighborhood-specific interventions, inviting community members to join us in imagining ways to stay warm and connected with one another during long Boston winters. We explored ideas for building a Sunbar, a mobile, transparent “greenhouse for humans” where folks can soak in the sun during the winter.

We engaged with community members in our individual neighborhoods with creative “staying warm” interventions – for example: creating temporary shelters and offering hot coffee, tea, and hand warmers to people at bus stops. We created YouTube music videos and live performances with recommendations for staying warm based on our community conversations and research.
