About Myths for the 22nd Century:

Myths for the 22nd Century will consider notions of care and co-evolution as part of Urbano’s 2023 Theme “Our Planet Ourselves.”  We will question as many false binaries as we can think of (and as many as we see in the world around us) while we research ecology, wholeness and oneness through discussion and art making.

As a group we will invent dance moves, make comic strips, build props, make playlists, assemble costumes, write poems and glue collages in order to articulate a fictional narrative tying together these themes. Our story will turn into a performance in three acts, with no speaking or singing: mostly just dancing. During the workshop our creative process will be approached as iterative/cyclical.

Through the process of drafting and redrafting we will also draw upon ideas surfaced in the winter Dance Sketch Book Portals workshop. Our Spring Show will stay connected to the same themes of art and technology and will reckon with the concept of multiple apocalypses. Taking into consideration current events and ancient stories of gods and goddesses from around the world we will imagine future generations looking back at our time now. Who gets to tell our story? What elements of magic are present in our world today? What will become of us? The work will embody the sensations and emotions of moving backwards and forwards in time. How can future generations understand our world and people?

People of all ages—adults, seniors, students, and youth age 14 and up—are invited to participate in this workshop series. We will provide you with all materials and instruction, and there is a stipend of up to $200 upon completion of the workshops.

Sessions take place Friday evenings at The Foundry in Kendall Square.

We are committed to maintaining a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for all participants. Every group session will be attended and monitored by an Urbano staff member. At this point, we are not requiring adult participants to complete a CORI check, but please note that this may change and that we are actively assessing the need for this for the safety of youth participants.
