Overview:

“Chapters of Choice” is an autobiographical comic-making workshop that will use storytelling, performance, and peer-led learning to understand the question: “do you feel like you have a choice?” A seemingly simple question, but for many young folks, a difficult and often neglected one.

For ten-weeks, Artist-in-Residence, Maria Fong, will use autobiographical comic-making to invite young artists in not only reflecting upon how they’ve made decisions for their lives in the past, but in learning from their peers about how they can go about making self-led choices in their future. (In a climate where systems are restricting the education and access to gender-affirming care for young people, we are intentionally opening up our space to all young people — especially queer and trans identifying folx — who are trying own their power, and make self-empowered choices about their futures).

Costs:

Free. Participants will receive a stipend (get paid) for their participation.


Times/Dates/Location:

  • Monday + Wednesday afternoons, 4:30-6:30 PM + some Saturday field trips (dates T.B.A.)

  • Sessions: January 13 - March 25

  • Final event: March 29, 2025

  • Location: Overlook Gallery, 175 Washington St, Brighton, MA 02135

  • Who: BPS students age 14-19 and Urbano alumni

Maria Fong:

Maria Fong is a Boston-based artist and youth worker from Berkeley, CA. A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Maria's enthusiasm for popular education and ethnic studies have led to an interactive and community-based art practice. Maria uses drawing to create animations, comics, and zines that explore themes of home, justice, gender, and playful participation. They have designed and facilitated workshops at the Boston Public Library, Institute of Contemporary Art, and Asian Community Development Corporation, among other organizations.
