“Chapters of Choice”

a Spring 2025 Youth Art Project with Artist-in-Residence, Maria Fong

About “Chapters of Choice”:

"Isn’t it funny how when there's something you really wanna do, it's sometimes harder?" noted a member of the ICA's Teen Exhibitions Program to one of Urbano's student artists from "Chapters of Choice.” A comic-making workshop about voice, choice, and agency, that presented its final showcase event at Unbound Visual Arts' Overlook Gallery on Saturday, March 29th.

For 10 weeks, Artist-in-Residence, Maria Fong, has been using comic-making to guide high-school students in reflecting upon choice and agency in their lives through “Chapters of Choice.” Helping them build this public presentation which invited attendees joined us in flipping through the voices, choices, decisions our students have illustrated onto paper all Winter and Spring. Participating in creative activities students designed for event attendees.

We’re more proud to share this event is only one of two exhibitions that will be presenting the works completed in "Chapters of Choice." The second exhibition of the works made in "Chapters of Choice" will be shown at the ICA's Teen Galleries at Seaport Studios (as curated by the ICA's Teen Exhibitions Program). Date and time TBA.

About the Artist:

Maria Fong is a Boston-based artist and youth worker from Berkeley, CA. A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Maria's enthusiasm for popular education and ethnic studies have led to an interactive and community-based art practice; their workshops provide opportunities to visualize emotions, advocate for housing justice, or strengthen confidence through expression, among other topics. Maria uses drawing to create animations, comics, and zines that explore themes of home, justice, gender, and playful participation.
