Participating Artists: Gerald Jimenez
Participating Teens: Urbano Teen Film Curators
Working with French high school and college-level film programs, Expériences de Cinéma challenges young filmmakers to create a personal response to classic experimental films. Urbano's ongoing partnership with Expériences de Cinéma gives Urbano's teen filmmakers teens a chance to collaborate on the creation of original short films, and then share their completed work with peers in Paris, France.
Expériences de Cinéma participants are instructed to watch and discuss a selected classic film which exemplifies a particular conceptual idea or filmmkaing technique. For example, in 2011 students watched Frederick Wiseman's High School, which provided rich material for a discussion of concepts of fairness in society and ambiguity between reality and fiction in contemporary storytelling. Next, teen film students in all participating programs submit a reel their own footage of outdoor scenes collected from local neighborhoods. This footage is shared among all Expériences de Cinéma groups, who use it to provide composite, international, establishing shots for their individual video projects.
In 2010-2011 the Teen Film Curators were asked to create a story about the American high school experience to share with teen filmmakers from Sweden, Romania, and France. The Nefarious Mark, produced, written, acted, and filmed by Urbano's 11 2010 Teen Film Curators, explores the complexity of relationships among students, and between young people and the authority figures in their schools. The Teen Curators' finished work was screened at Le Centre Pompidou in Paris for an international audience of teen filmmakers.
